BTEX is the abbreviation for the substances benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and the xylenes. These “volatile aromatic hydrocarbons” are of great industrial importance for the petrochemical industry and can be found in a wide variety of places. They are harmful to health and some are carcinogenic or neurotoxic. These molecules are often found in contaminated sites or are used as solvents. They are strictly regulated due to their harmful properties.
Depending on the boundary conditions, different methods are used to adsorb BTEX:
- Solvent recovery
- Pump and treat process
- Situ injection process with colloidal activated carbon solution
